what sucks about hip hop these days…

Just a little rant.. I’m not a big fan of hip hop these days because it seems so centered on the superficial.. most of the time its some guy who’s bragging about how much money he’s got or how much he spends or about how he’s trying to steal a “ho”.. i don’t know but growing up as a kid, I didn’t hear Cool J or Kool Moe Dee or Big Daddy Kane or RUN DMC ever brag so much about how much money or diamonds or fancy cars they drove… they rapped about they’re love for music, respect for their hood, the shoes they wore.. of course they rapped about sex back then too, that hasn’t changed, but it wasn’t so “look at me, check me out, i’m so fucking special cuz i got money!”.. all that bragging and showing off shit is pathetic.. to these bozos it’s like, do you have anything else to offer besides cash?  do you have a personality?  a soul?

I know that Fresh Prince (now Will Smith), MC Hammer and Kid n’ Play seem pretty tame compared to the rap stars of today, but I appreciate the fact that they were good role models for young kids, teaching them how to have fun and not praising drugs and carrying guns and shit..

i don’t know.. i mean, i love hip hop when it’s fun or when it has a message (think Public Enemy), but when its about shallow shit, I don’t know what’s worse, the guy behind the song or the dumbass worshipping him.  I don’t think girls as “ho’s”, though some act the part ;)   I laugh when I see the guy in the club trying so hard to act like a hot shot..  flash some jewelry and spend some more money on bottles to impress girls who are interested only in your money.. i guess Vegas has gotten to me.. I’m too much from the country to fall prey to this lifestyle I guess.. i love the nightlife, dancing, partying.. i’m just more into doing in places and with people that celebrate from the soul..

i’ve had great times in miami, new york, denver, all over europe.. the clubs here in Vegas are designed to get you to spend money and to praise those who spend the most.. not about the love of music, dancing and freedom.. too often the people who come here for that have to wait in line for an hour just to spend $40 to walk in the door.. and then it’s another line to spend $15 on a well drink.. sad.

the most fun i have is kicking it with good people, chilling at the pad.. sometimes me and my friends throw the sickest house parties.. dancers from vegas shows who know what moving to the music is all about.. i’m truly lucky to have these people in my life and to be able to take part in a true innocent celebration..

when i make mad paper, i’m spending it on family, business, community.. then maybe a little on fun.  but never throwing it away to impress people that could truly care less about me.  i wish these rappers or sports celebrities would show more passion in contributing to the world, returning the favor as they’re so fortunate to have the money that they have.  one guy i went to school with is steve nash (MVP from the Phoenix Suns).. we both graduated from Santa Clara..  he was the nicest guy back then and he hasn’t changed since!  google him and you’ll see that he’s very active in helping the community and contributing to charities.. a truly awesome guy.

i just hope to make a real difference in the world someday.  i try to uplift my friends and help them reach new levels.  that goes the same with the guys and girls who work for my company.  i truly believe in karma and that rewards follow those who live a righteous life and live to help others.

anyways, enough of the long rant.. i still love hip hop, some songs like “Live your life” by TI uplift me and bring me back to my roots.  i hope more artists start talking less about what their money has bought and more about causes they believe in or things they wish to inspire in others.  I’m all about having fun and it’s okay to brag once in a while, but keep it real and don’t forget that what you say has an affect on others, especially the kids.  Do that for us and i’ll keep the radio station on Hip Hop more often :)
